Q: How do I play the Curling event in Winter Sports: The Ultimate Challenge or Winter Sports 2?
A:

The controls for Curling can be broken down into 3 stages:

Stage 1 - Direction

This is where you decide which direction you want to launch your stone. It can be done in one of two ways. Either 1) point the Wii Remote at your TV set, pointing it left and right to adjust the arrow, or 2) point your Wii Remote away from the TV set and use the Right and Left directions on +Control Pad. When you have reached your desired arrow direction press the A Button on the Wii Remote to proceed to the Curling stage. If you have reached the Curling stage and want to return to the Direction stage press the B Button on your Wii Remote.

Stage 2 - Curling

After choosing an intitial direction to launch your stone, you can decide which direction you want your stone to curl. Either 1) move the arrow by pointing your Wii Remote left and right, or 2) point the Wii Remote away from your TV set and use the +Control Pad. Press the A Button to initiate the Test Throw Stage. If you have entered the Test Throw stage and want to return to the Curling stage press the B Button.

Stage 3 - Test Throw

In this stage you can practice the throwing motion to get a sense of the power you are generating. If you want to return to the Curling Stage press the B Button at any time.

To achieve an ideal throwing motion:

Bend your elbow and hold the Wii Remote under your armpit with the Wii Remote pointing toward the ground and the button side with the A Button and +Control Pad facing the TV set. From this position you begin the motion by thrusting the WiiRemote down while keeping the Wii Remote pointed at the floor. When the Wii Remote is at your waist level flip your wrist up so that it is now pointed at the television and extend it forward toward the television, thus completing the motion. Keep the Wii Remote extended and watch the arrow fill up with the color white. The faster you complete the motion, the more power it will generate. When you feel that you have a good grasp of the proper motion you need to achieve your desired power you are ready to throw.

To Throw:

Press and hold the A Button while you do your throwing motion. Release the A Button when you finish your motion to release the stone. The stone will be released when you release the A Button so be careful not to release it until the arrow has finished filling up with white. Conversely, the stone will not be released unless you release the A Button. Thus, if you don't like the amount of power you generated with your motion, simply keep the A Button pressed and repeat your motion until you get it right.
